RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of Alzheimer disease and Alzheimer disease-related dementia in the United States has amplified the health care burden and caregiving challenges, especially for caregivers of people living with dementia. A web-based care planning tool, Olera.care, was developed to aid caregivers in managing common challenges associated with dementia care. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to preliminarily evaluate the quality and usability of the Olera.care platform and assess the preferences of using the technology and interests in learning about different older adult care services among caregivers. METHODS: For interview 1, we aim to understand caregiving needs and let the participants start engaging with the platform. After they engage with the platform, we schedule the second interview and let the participants complete the Mobile Application Rating Scale. The survey also included sociodemographic characteristics, caregiving experiences, communication preferences in technology adoption, and older adult care service use and interests. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the quality and usability of the platform and characteristics of the participants. We conducted 2-sample 2-tailed t tests to examine the differences in the Mobile Application Rating Scale evaluation scores by caregiver characteristics. RESULTS: Overall, 30 adult caregivers in Texas completed the evaluation. The majority were aged ≥50 years (25/30, 83%), women (23/30, 77%), White (25/30, 83%), and financially stable (20/30, 67%). The Olera.care platform evaluation showed high satisfaction, with an overall mean rating of 4.57 (SD 0.57) of 5, and scored well in engagement (mean 4.10, SD 0.61), functionality (mean 4.46, SD 0.44), aesthetics (mean 4.58, SD 0.53), and information quality (mean 4.76, SD 0.44) consistently across all participants. A statistically significant difference (P=.02) was observed in functionality evaluation scores by duration of caregiving, with caregivers dedicating more hours to care rating it higher than those providing less care (mean 4.6, SD 0.4 vs mean 4.2, SD 0.5). In addition, caregivers with less caregiving experience reported significantly higher evaluation scores for aesthetics (P=.04) and information quality (P=.03) compared to those with longer years of caregiving. All participants expressed a willingness to recommend the app to others, and 90% (27/30) rated the app overall positively. Most of the participants (21/30, 70%) favored anonymous interactions before receiving personalized feedback and preferred computer browsers over mobile apps. Medical home health services were the most used, with a diverse range of services being used. Caregiver support groups, medical providers, memory care, meal services, and adult day care were among the most desired services for future exploration. CONCLUSIONS: The Olera.care web-based platform is a practical, engaging, easy-to-use, visually appealing, and informative tool for dementia caregivers. Future development and research are essential to enhance the platform and comprehensively evaluate it among a broader population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To compare the outcomes of hypospadias repair using tubularized incised plate (TIP) urethroplasty and modified TIP with lateral skin to widen the urethral plate (WTIP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from pre-pubertal boys who underwent primary hypospadias repair between May 2018 and July 2023. The cases were divided into two groups; one group underwent TIP with urethral plate ≥ 6 mm width and the other group with urethral plate width < 6 mm underwent WTIP. WTIP urethroplasty was performed by widening incisions on the outer margins of the urethral plate to incorporate penile and glandular skin lateral to the urethral plate to facilitate tubularization. Complication rates and urinary functions were compared. RESULTS: A total of 157 patients were enrolled in this study. Eighty-eight cases with narrow urethral plate were subjected to WTIP urethroplasty, and the rest were subjected to TIP urethroplasty. The preoperative glans width in WTIP group was less than that in TIP group (P < 0.001), and 44.3% had midshaft meatus in WTIP group compared to 17.4% in TIP group (P < 0.001). However, the incidences of postoperative complications (17.6% vs. 21.6%, P = 0.550) were not statistically different between the TIP and WTIP groups. In addition, both groups did not differ significantly in postoperative uroflowmetry assessment. CONCLUSIONS: The described technique helps to create an adequately caliber aesthetic neomeatus and facilitates tubularization, especially in hypospadias with a narrow urethral plate. Our data suggest that augmentation of a narrow urethral plate with WTIP has a similar surgical outcome to that of the TIP procedure in patients with a wide urethral plate.

RESUMO

In the field of neuroscience, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are used to connect the human brain with external devices, providing insights into the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive processes, including aesthetic perception. Non-invasive BCIs, such as EEG and fNIRS, are critical for studying central nervous system activity and understanding how individuals with cognitive deficits process and respond to aesthetic stimuli. This study assessed twenty participants who were divided into control and impaired aging (AI) groups based on MMSE scores. EEG and fNIRS were used to measure their neurophysiological responses to aesthetic stimuli that varied in pleasantness and dynamism. Significant differences were identified between the groups in P300 amplitude and late positive potential (LPP), with controls showing greater reactivity. AI subjects showed an increase in oxyhemoglobin in response to pleasurable stimuli, suggesting hemodynamic compensation. This study highlights the effectiveness of multimodal BCIs in identifying the neural basis of aesthetic appreciation and impaired aging. Despite its limitations, such as sample size and the subjective nature of aesthetic appreciation, this research lays the groundwork for cognitive rehabilitation tailored to aesthetic perception, improving the comprehension of cognitive disorders through integrated BCI methodologies.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The fully synthetic skin substitute, NovoSorb Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix (BTM), may be a cost-effective alternative to the animal-derived Integra Dermal Regeneration Template (IDRT). However, the current literature insufficiently compares the two. Therefore, our study compared clinical, aesthetic, and economic outcomes in treating soft tissue wounds with IDRT, an animal-derived template, vs BTM, a fully synthetic template. METHODS: Our single-center retrospective study compared outcomes of 26 patient cases treated with BTM (57.7%) or IDRT (42.3%) during 2011-2022. RESULTS: The mean surgery time was significantly shorter in BTM cases (1.632 ± 0.571 hours) compared with IDRT cases (5.282 ± 5.102 hours, P = 0.011). Median postoperative hospital stay was notably shorter for BTM placement than IDRT placement (0.95 vs 6.60 days, P = 0.003). The median postoperative follow-up length approached a shorter duration in the BTM group (P = 0.054); however, median follow-up visits were significantly lower in the BTM group compared with the IDRT group (5 vs 14, P = 0.012). The median duration for complete wound closure was shorter for BTM (46.96 vs 118.91 days, P = 0.011). Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix demonstrated a notably lower infection rate (0.0%) compared with IDRT (36.4%, P = 0.022). Integra Dermal Regeneration Template exhibited higher wound hypertrophy rates (81.8%) than BTM (26.7%, P = 0.015). Revisionary surgeries were significantly more frequent in the BTM group (P < 0.001). Failed closure, defined as requiring one or more attempts, exhibited a significant difference, with a higher risk in the IDRT group (26.7%) compared with BTM (6.7%, P = 0.003). Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix showed a lower mean Vancouver Scar Scale adjusted fraction (0.279) compared with IDRT (0.639, P < 0.001). Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix incurred lower costs compared with IDRT but displayed a lower mean profit per square centimeter ($10.63 vs $22.53, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Economically, although the net profit per square centimeter of dermal template may favor IDRT, the ancillary benefits associated with BTM in terms of reduced hospital stay, shorter surgery times, fewer follow-up visits, and lower revisionary surgery rates contribute substantially to overall cost-effectiveness. Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix use reflects more efficient resource use and potential cost savings, aligning with broader trends in healthcare emphasizing value-based and patient-centered care.

RESUMO

Lip augmentation can correct lip asymmetries, reduce fine lines, define lip shape and Cupid's bow, and add natural fullness to the lips. Achieving a perfect result when injecting lip filler is an art that combines the desire of the patient with the skill of the practitioner and the practitioner's understanding of the surrounding anatomy. It is essential for aesthetic practitioners to prioritize open communication, provide custom-tailored treatments, and have a strong commitment to achieving natural and harmonious results. By following these principles, patients can enjoy the benefits of enhanced lips that boost their self-confidence while maintaining their unique beauty.

RESUMO

In the field of medical aesthetics and plastic surgery, it is not uncommon to interact with clients who never seem to be satisfied, regardless of the success of an intervention. Medical professionals may attribute this to the patient having an overly critical nature; however, this continual dissatisfaction could also be the result of a mental health disorder known as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) that is significantly underdiagnosed and prevalent within the plastic surgery and aesthetic patient population. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), BDD is defined as, "a preoccupation with one or more perceived defects or flaws in physical appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others" (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2016, Table 23). Having the ability to identify the signs of BDD, utilize appropriate communication skills with individuals who may have BDD, and understand the implications of providing additional aesthetic treatments for patients who present with BDD allows aesthetic practitioners to prioritize and promote patient safety, well-being, and satisfaction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A firming and toning cosmetic body lotion (FTB) was developed to target key pathways relevant to body skin health and rejuvenation that may complement the improvements observed after noninvasive body contouring (NIBC). A pilot study explored the efficacy and tolerability of FTB as an adjunct to cryolipolysis. METHODS: An open-label, single-site, single-arm, 12-week study enrolled subjects aged 20 to 65 who had pre-elected to receive 1 or more cryolipolysis treatments (CoolSculpting® or CoolSculpting® Elite; Zeltiq Aesthetics, Inc.) on the inner thigh, back/bra fat, or submental areas. Immediately post-procedure, the investigator applied FTB to the treated area. Subjects then applied FTB topically twice daily for 12 weeks on the treated area. Skin texture and firmness were graded visually by the investigator using a 10-point scale, and subjects graded effectiveness, product attributes, and satisfaction with a questionnaire.  Results: Seventeen subjects (16 women, 1 man) enrolled. After 12 weeks of FTB application, significant improvements in skin firmness were observed in all treated areas, while skin texture showed improvements on the inner thigh and back/bra fat (all P≤0.009). With continued use following cryolipolysis, more than 70% of subjects agreed that FTB improved skin firmness, smoothness, and overall appearance. Subjects indicated that FTB was an effective adjunct to cryolipolysis. Throughout the study, 86% to 92% of subjects reported “fair,” “good,” or “excellent” satisfaction with FTB.  Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that FTB may complement skin improvements seen post-NIBC.J Drugs Dermatol. 2024;23(4): doi:10.36849/JDD.7917.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin is a crucial therapeutic tool with broad indications in both cosmetic and medical fields. However, the expanding cosmetic use and increased dosages of botulinum toxin have raised concerns about resistance, making it essential to study the awareness and management practices among healthcare professionals. METHODS: A survey was conducted among clinical physicians using botulinum toxin. The study investigated their experiences, awareness, and management practices related to toxin resistance. Real-time mobile app-based surveys were administered to clinicians attending the 45th International Academic Conference of the Korean Academy of Laser and Dermatology (KALDAT) on December 3, 2023. RESULTS: Among 3140 participants, 673 clinical physicians completed the survey. Of these, 363 clinicians (53.9%) reported experiencing botulinum toxin resistance. Regarding the resistance rate, 59.4% indicated less than 1%, 36% reported approximately 1%-25%, and 95.4% reported less than 25%. Efforts to prevent resistance included maintaining intervals of over 3 months (54.8%), using products with lower resistance potential (47.0%), employing minimal effective doses (28.2%), and minimizing re-administration (14.9%). CONCLUSION: In the South Korean aesthetic medicine community, a majority of clinical physician's report encountering botulinum toxin resistance. Given the potential loss of various benefits associated with resistance, there is a need to establish appropriate guidelines based on mechanistic studies and current status assessments. Educating clinicians on applicable guidelines is crucial.

Integrated skin care is defined as the complementary use of topical treatments to nonsurgical facial rejuvenation procedures, such as lasers and radiofrequency microneedling devices, to produce pleasing aesthetic results. Real-world experience from expert dermatologists is invaluable in guiding patient treatment plans, as there are limited clinical trials on the efficacy of integrated skincare regimens. The SkinCeuticals (New York, NY) Phyto Corrective gel (botanical serum-containing corrective gel) contains a lightweight botanical serum that hydrates, calms, and soothes skin. It contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients derived from plant and fruit extracts, making it an appealing option for adjunctive treatment of post-procedure erythema and swelling.  J Drugs Dermatol. 2024;23:3(Suppl 2):s3-s14.

RESUMO

This article analyses the evolutionist discourses on the senses that emerged in the late 19th century, when theories on the evolution of species were in full sway. Drawing on newspapers, essays and medical literature, this article aims to set face to face the two currents of thought that I have identified regarding sensory evolution: the one that stressed the value of the progressive specialisation of the senses as evidence for human evolution mainly supported by Max Nordau, and the one which regarded the sensory regrouping, exemplified by the phenomenon of synaesthesia, as the true symptom of evolution, strongly supported by Victor Segalen. A close examination of their arguments will provide clues concerning their relative position vis-à-vis the theory that stressed the exceptional nature of humankind among all living beings. Based on newspapers, essays and medical literature, this paper, which straddles several fields (history of science, philosophy, cultural history and aesthetics) aims to set both positions face to face, examining their arguments in detail and establishing their genealogies. This will lead to a better understanding of the scope and range of evolutionist discourses in the fin de siècle culture and on their impact upon artistic practices.

RESUMO

Upper extremity reconstruction remains challenging due to the high functional and esthetic demands of this location. The anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap is a workhorse flap for microsurgical reconstruction of the upper extremity and can be elevated in various planes depending on desired thickness of the flap. Microsurgical reconstruction of the upper extremity often benefits from a thin flap that can resurface the extremity, which can provide improved functional and esthetic outcomes. This article reviews the anatomy, preoperative planning, and operative technique, as well as presents 4 cases to illustrate the outcomes and benefits of thin and thinned ALT flaps.

RESUMO

In patients with breast cancer, oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery can achieve a good aesthetic outcome without compromising oncological outcomes. However, tumors located in the upper inner quadrant (UIQ) are challenging for surgeons because treatment gives rise to visible scars, glandular deformities, and deviation of the nipple-areolar complex. The present study was performed to analyze a modification of the matrix rotation technique for UIQ tumors and address the main drawback of this technique, which is a visible scar on the commonly exposed part of the breast. A prospective database of seven patients who presented with UIQ tumors and underwent the new modification technique was utilized for the analysis. All patients preferred the modified technique over the standard technique because of the absence of a scar in the UIQ (visible breast line). The postoperative patient-reported outcomes regarding breast shape, breast symmetry, and scar location were also satisfactory. No surgical complications were reported. This modified surgical technique results in a scarless UIQ and is an aesthetically acceptable procedure that can be considered for UIQ tumors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) exhibits inhibitory effects on the neuromuscular junction, and its use is well established in cosmetic dermatology. Our review aims to analyze the evidence for its use in the treatment of various dermatological, neurological, gastroenterological, ophthalmological, otorhinolaryngological, dental, urological, gynecological, and cardiovascular disorders. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed for studies published between 2012 and 2022 that discussed the therapeutic use of BoNT in human participants. A total of 58 studies were selected for inclusion in this review.  Results: We discovered a large range of therapeutic applications of BoNT toxin beyond aesthetic and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved non-aesthetic uses.  Conclusions: BoNT is a powerful neurotoxin that has varied FDA-approved indications and has been studied in a wide range of therapeutic applications. Further investigation through higher power studies is needed to assess the potential of BoNT and expand its versatility across other medical specialties.  J Drugs Dermatol. 2024;23(3):173-186. doi:10.36849/JDD.7243e.

RESUMO

Human needs, and their fulfillment, are the building blocks of human development, personality, and well-being. However, no published paper in the field of psychology has focused on exploring aesthetic needs. Maslow (1986) gave the topic little more than a paragraph; and Dweck [1], in her elegant Unified Theory of Motivation, Personality, and Development, never mentions aesthetic needs. The aim of this article is to describe developing a scale for measuring the intensity of aesthetic needs. The structure, psychometric properties, and criterion-related validity of the scale were verified with three independent samples (total N = 592). The results of an EFA and two CFAs indicated a three-factor structure: 1) the need to aestheticize everyday life (aesthetic experiences of everyday objects and events unrelated to art, such as the presentation of food or the appearance of a workspace, etc.); 2) the need for contact with aesthetic creations (the arts); 3) the need to aestheticize the built and natural environments (urban spaces, architecture, parks, wild nature, etc.). In addition, our criterion-related convergent validity studies have shown that people with high aesthetic needs are characterized by experiencing more intense experiences in contact with works of art, have higher aesthetic competence in art, are more intensely involved in four forms of beauty, have a higher ability to integrate beauty, a stronger trait gratitude, curiosity about nature, greater sensitivity to disgust, and the need for internal and external stimulation. This scale may prove useful in research on individual differences and the psychology of aesthetics.

RESUMO

Data visualization plays a vital role in modern scientific communication across diverse domains, shaping the understanding of complex information through color choices. However, the significance of color palette selection goes beyond aesthetics and scientific communication, encompassing accessibility for all, especially individuals with color vision deficiencies. To address this challenge, we introduce "Color Quest," an intuitive Shiny app that empowers users to explore color palettes for data visualization while considering inclusivity. The app allows users to visualize palettes across various types of plots and maps envisioning how they appear to individuals with color blindness. In addition, it enables users to visualize palettes on their own custom-uploaded images. This short communication presents the app's design, interactive interface, and transformative potential in enhancing data visualization practices. Developed using open-source standards, Color Quest aligns with accessibility discussions, offering a practical tool and platform for raising awareness about inclusive design. Its open-source nature fosters transparency, community collaboration, and long-term sustainability. Color Quest's practicality renders it indispensable for scientific domains, simplifying palette selection and promoting accessibility. Its impact extends beyond academia to diverse communication settings, harmonizing information dissemination, aesthetics and accessibility for more impactful scientific communication.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aesthetics of everyday life improves physical and mental health and social communication. This study aims to develop and test a novel instrument that assesses the aesthetics of the everyday life of older adults. METHODS: A mixed-methods study with a sequential exploratory approach was conducted from November 2021 to December 2022. Item generation and questionnaire formation were developed through interviews with older adults and a literature review (stage 1). A cross-sectional study was then conducted to test the psychometric properties of the novel scale among 380 older adults referred to Urban Comprehensive Health Service Centers (stage 2). The construct validity was tested via exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and with the principal component analysis method. Internal consistency and reliability of the scale were evaluated with Cronbach's alpha and test-retest with a 2-week interval. RESULTS: The initial scale was prepared with 39 items. In stage 2, EFA revealed a seven-factor model with 34 items. Internal consistency was acceptable for extracted sub-scales (Cronbach's alpha range: 0.67- 0.93) and the total score (0.926). The intra-class correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability was 0.90. CONCLUSIONS: The AELSA is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating the aesthetics of everyday life in older adults. the scale will help policymakers in formulating interventions to improve mental health and well-being in older adults. Moreover, Further studies is need to provide more support of construct validity.

RESUMO

Beauty is related to our lives in various ways and examining it from an interdisciplinary approach is essential. People are very concerned with their appearance. A widely accepted beauty ideal is that the thinner an individual is, the more beautiful they are. However, the effect of continuous motion on body form aesthetics is unclear. Additionally, an upright pelvic posture in the sagittal plane during walking seems to affect the aesthetic judgments of female appearance. We directly analyzed the influence of body form and walking pattern on aesthetic visual impressions from a third-person perspective with a two-way analysis of variance. Captured motion data for three conditions-upright pelvis, normal pelvis, and posteriorly tilted pelvic posture-were applied to each of three mannequins, representing thin, standard, and obese body forms. When participants watched stimulus videos of the mannequins walking with various postures, a significantly higher score for aesthetic visual impression was noted for an upright pelvic posture than for a posteriorly tilted pelvic posture, irrespective of body form (F(2, 119) = 79.89, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.54). These findings show that the third-person perspective of beauty can be improved even without being thin by walking with an upright pelvic posture.

RESUMO

Poly-L-lactin acid (PLLA) has been widely used in the field of bio-medicine. In 2004, as an injectable material, PLLA was approved by the FDA to treat AIDS-related facial atrophy. Since then, several injectable stuffs containing PLLA have been approved for marketing in various countries and regions. Recently, PLLA has often been used to treat facial rejuvenation problems like cutaneous depressions and static wrinkles which always induce unsatisfactory facial expression. This review introduces the physicochemical properties, regeneration stimulating mechanism, applications in aesthetics and injectable comorbidity of PLLA.
